Located in the Mayan Village of Indian Creek 25 miles north of Punta Gorda Town and about an hour and a half from Placencia Village lies the Akte’il Ha cacao Farm which is owned and operated by the Maquin family, who are descendants of the ancient Mayas who once cultivated cacao in the region.
Upon arrival at Akte’il Ha farm the Maquin family will warmly welcome you to see their farm.
Where they will take you on a 45 minutes tour of their organic cacao farm, here you will see firsthand how the cacao is grown. You will also learn the historical value of cacao and chocolate uses from the ancient times by their ancestors and how it has descended from then until now.it is still used and loved in every home of these traditional people.
after the tour of the farm you will then experience the transformation of the seeds into the wonderful chocolate the many people from around the world enjoy.
The Maquin Family will teach you furthermore about the cacao and have you partake in the making and tasting of original Mayan made chocolate.
Interesting facts about Cacao:
First known consumers of the cacao / chocolate were the Mayan people of the Central Americas.
Cacao beans were used as a form of trading in the ancient Mayan days.
Belizean cacao beans are of the highest quality than any other beans being produced around the world.

GARIFUNA CULTURAL & CULINARY TOUR | CULTURE MEETS CULINARY
The Garifuna people of Belize are a people descended from a mixture of African slaves imported into the Caribbean and indigenous people of the Caribbean Islands.
This unique blending of two different populations has given the Garifuna a truly unique culture. On one hand, the Garifuna have retained many influences from their African heritage, including their language and musical traditions.
Likewise, their heritage inherited from the indigenous populations of the Caribbean play an important role in modern Garifuna culture. The government of Belize has embraced the enormous cultural contributions of the Garifuna to music, food, and the arts. There is now a national holiday (November 19th) that celebrates the arrival of the Garifuna.
The Garifuna have successfully managed to preserve most of their traditional culture, officially recognized as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations in 2001.
The Garifuna contributions to education, culinary arts, music, language, and dance continue to demonstrate the resilience of the Garifuna, a proud people with the skills and resolve to face every challenge with strength of conviction and artful expression.
On this tour, you will learn more about Garifuna music, food and arts. The tour can best be combined with Serpon Sugar Mill or Waterfall visit at Bocawina.

Tour 1. Spice Tour
Our Spice Tour is the most popular of the 3 with a duration of an hour you will have a guided tour of the facilities either in tractor pulled trailer, golf cart or tricycle cart, or by walking. Areas you will visit are all the Spice Blocks which include all spices, Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Vanilla and Black pepper. You will get to touch, smell and taste some of the spices directly from the plant.
Tour 2. Culinary Tour
Come and enjoy our hour and a half Culinary guided tour of the facilities either in tractor pulled trailer, golf cart or tricycle cart, or by walking. You will visit all the spice Blocks but with more time spend in the Cinnamon and Vanilla Blocks to collect specimens. You will be able to watch and maybe participate in the extraction of Cinnamon you have collected during your tour, and the Vanilla bean curing and the demonstration of cooking using our own spices.
Tour 3. Bird Watching
Imagine all the beautiful birds that must inhabit this amazing place drawn here mostly because of the tasteful fruit trees and hardwood trees, there must be there must be hundreds of colorful birds that are happy to call Belize Spice Farm & Botanical Gardens their home. Enjoy and early start of our trails to be able to see and enjoy the sounds of the many species of birds that inhabit the area.
